91Թ recently hosted an inspiring Islamic parenting seminar on 18 November 2025 titled “Raising Children with Tarbiyyah: The Parent as the First Murabbi,” delivered by Professor Mohamad Abdalla, Director of the Centre for Islamic Thought and Education (CITE), University of South Australia. The session served as both a reminder and a call to action for our families and staff.
Professor Abdalla explained that Tarbiyyah is not limited to academic learning. It a holistic, lifelong process of raising, nurturing, caring for, protecting, and developing a human being. It nurtures a child’s ruh (spirit), ‘aql (intellect), and jasad (body), with the ultimate purpose of helping them know Allah, worship Him, and develop noble character.
A central message of the seminar was that parents remain the first and most influential Murabbi. Every word, action, and emotional response within the home becomes part of a child’s formation. Professor Abdalla encouraged parents to model prophetic character, practise gentleness, strengthen their own spiritual habits, and create homes filled with mercy, respect, and emotional safety.
Professor Abdalla also cautioned families about the impact of devices and digital overexposure, noting that constant screen use can weaken Tarbiyyah, disrupt family connection, and expose children to influences that compete with the values taught at home and school. He encouraged parents to be vigilant, set healthy boundaries, and ensure that devices never replace meaningful conversations, positive role modelling, and spiritual growth.
He reminded us that for Tarbiyyah to take root, what children see at home and what they experience at school must reinforce one another. Parents and teachers must therefore work hand-in-hand to provide a unified foundation of faith, values, and character.
Professor Abdalla’s message was clear: we cannot nurture our children unless we nurture ourselves first. Tarbiyyah of our children begins with our own transformation.
We thank Professor Abdalla for this timely and inspiring reminder. We invite all families to join us in strengthening our shared commitment to Tarbiyyah, role modelling, and raising a generation who knows Allah, lives Islam, and embodies beautiful character, in sha Allah.
