Year 5 Incursion: Understanding Democracy in Action

11 June 2026

Last week, our Year 5 students participated in an engaging Democracy, Civics and Citizenship incursion delivered by LinkED.

Year 5 Incursion: Understanding Democracy in Action

The session provided students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Australia’s democratic system, including the three levels of government, the role of citizens in society, and the processes involved in making laws. Through interactive activities and discussions, students explored key concepts such as voting, representation, rights and responsibilities, and the importance of active citizenship.

A highlight of the incursion was a mock parliamentary session, where the auditorium was transformed into the House of Representatives. Students took on a variety of parliamentary roles and participated in a debate, experiencing first-hand how ideas are presented, discussed and voted upon within Australia’s system of government. The use of costumes and props helped bring the learning to life and encouraged active participation.

We thank LinkED Incursion for delivering such a meaningful and inspiring session, and we look forward to seeing our students grow into informed and engaged citizens.
